Why the fixings matter

A television on the wrong fixing is a television on the floor.

Plasterboard, brick and stud all need different anchors, and a large screen on a badly-fixed bracket is a genuine hazard. We check what the wall actually is before anything is drilled.

Worth knowing round here: the newer estates at Tingley and Birstall are mostly stud and dot-and-dab, and the older stock in Morley is solid brick. They want different fixings, which is why we look before we drill rather than after.

The bracket matters as much as the wall. A fixed bracket holds the screen flat against it. A tilting one angles the screen down, which is what you want above a fireplace. A full-motion arm swings it round for a better view from the sofa, at the cost of sticking out further when it is folded back. Bigger screens need a bracket rated for their weight and their fixing pattern, not one that simply looks about right in the box, so we check the screen against the bracket before anything goes up.
